What is a directional antenna?

  • Release time: 2024-03-11

A directional antenna refers to an antenna that emits and receives electromagnetic waves in one or several specific directions, while transmitting and receiving electromagnetic waves in other directions are zero or extremely small. The use of directional antennas is commonly used to cover longer streets and has the following advantages:
1. Has significant forward gain
2. This feature is very useful when it can suppress backward signals and cause potential interference to the cells behind it. Directional antennas can improve indoor coverage of certain buildings within a microcellular coverage scale.
Type difference: Antennas have different radiation or reception abilities in different directions of space, which is the directionality of antennas. According to the different directionality, there are two types of antennas: omnidirectional and directional. Below, we will mainly explain the differences and related parameters between them.
Omnidirectional antenna
Omnidirectional antenna, which exhibits uniform radiation at 360 ° on a horizontal pattern, is commonly known as directionless. In general, the smaller the lobe width, the greater the gain. Omnidirectional antennas are generally used in communication systems with close spacing, large coverage, and low cost. The gain is generally below 9dB. The radiation scale of an omnidirectional antenna is similar to that of an apple.
